What you pay, in full: the park fee shown above, a World Wind Sports service fee of 2.1 percent, and card processing. Nothing else is added at checkout. Keys parks collect sales tax on entry even from annual pass holders. Entry is not guaranteed once the park reaches capacity — that is a state rule, and refunds go through the park at 1-800-326-3521.

The Spot

Shallow, warm, and nobody's secret for much longer

Ocean side of US 1, eleven miles west of Long Key. The water stays waist-deep for a quarter mile, the surf is modest, the current is weak, and a sandbar surfaces east of the point when the tide drops. Launch and land from the day use area, then stay three hundred feet off the shoreline — park rule, and it keeps everybody happy.

The grass behind the beach is why riders drive down from Miami. You set up on it instead of picking sand out of your bridles all week.

The hardest reservation in the Keys

Twenty-eight sites on a gravel pad with twenty, thirty and fifty amp power, water, a picnic table, a charcoal grill and hammock posts. Beach access between sites thirteen and fifteen, some sites with ocean views, an accessible bathhouse with hot showers, and a dump station. No laundry. Thirty-six dollars a night plus tax.

Florida residents book eleven months out and the good weeks are gone the morning they open. Cancellations do happen — they just do not stay open long. Club members get a message the moment a site frees up.

The Park

What it actually looks like

Mangrove swamp, rockland hammock, and one of the largest stands of thatch palm left in the United States. Birders come for the raptor migration, paddlers come on the calm days, and the whole place lights up when the forecast fills in.

Questions

The stuff people ask at the gate, answered before you leave the house.

Why buy a pass here instead of at the gate?

Because on a windy Saturday the gate line is the difference between riding and watching. We buy the pass, it lands on your phone, you drive in.

How long is a day pass good for?

The day you bought it, and that is all. Each visit is a separate purchase. If you are coming most weekends, the annual pass is cheaper by the end of the first month.

Does the park rent kiteboarding gear?

No. The park rents kayaks and runs guided mangrove tours every other Friday, weather and tide permitting. Anything with a kite on it, you bring it or you book it through us.

Where can I launch?

Launch and land in the day use area only, then ride three hundred feet off the shoreline. The park wrote those rules so kiting and swimming can share the beach.

Can you book my campsite for me?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. You book with the state yourself. What we do is watch the calendar and tell you the second a site opens, which is the part that actually costs people their trip.

What if the park is full when I get there?

Entry is not guaranteed at capacity, pass or no pass. That is the state's rule. Refunds are handled by the park on 1-800-326-3521.
