Waist deepfor a quarter mile.

Every pass the park sells. Bought before you arrive.

On a forecast weekend the entrance backs up onto the Overseas Highway while the wind is already filling in. Buy here, it lands on your phone, you roll in.

The whole price, out loud. You pay the park fee shown, a World Wind Sports service fee of 2.1 percent, and card processing. That is the entire bill — nothing appears at checkout that is not on this page. Keys parks collect sales tax on entry even from annual pass holders. Entry is never guaranteed once the park reaches capacity; that is a state rule, not ours, and refunds are handled by the park at 1-800-326-3521.

The Water

A lagoon that does half the teaching

Ocean side of US 1, eleven miles west of Long Key. The bottom stays waist deep for a quarter mile out, the surf is modest, the current is weak, and when the tide drops a sandbar surfaces east of the point that you can stand on in the middle of the Atlantic.

It is the reason riders drive three hours from Miami for a day trip, and the reason first-timers who would be terrified anywhere else end up riding by the afternoon.

  • Launch and land in the day use area only — then stay 300 feet off the shoreline
  • Grass rigging field behind the beach, so no sand in your lines
  • Booties worth wearing — sharp rock, urchins and coralline algae in patches
  • Slick marl mud right at the water's edge, so walk your gear in slowly
  • Roll your lines when you are not flying; the volunteer golf carts do not see them

Conditions

When to come, and what you get

November – AprilThe season. Cold fronts stack up one after another and the east side lights up. Book camping eleven months out or ride the cancellation list.
East to SoutheastThe money direction — cross-onshore, clean, and it runs the length of the beach. Northeast after a front is strong and gusty near shore.
TideLow tide exposes the sandbar a quarter mile east and turns the whole flat into a standing-depth playground. High tide is deeper and softer for jumps.
SummerLight and hot, better for kayaks, snorkelling and birding than for kites. Hurricane season runs June to November — watch the park's closure notices.
Camping

The hardest reservation in the Keys

Twenty-eight sites laid out on a gravel pad with twenty, thirty and fifty amp power, water, a picnic table, a charcoal grill and hammock posts already set. Beach access sits between sites thirteen and fifteen, a few sites look straight out at the ocean, and the bathhouse is accessible with hot showers. There is a dump station. There is no laundry.

Thirty-six dollars a night plus tax — which is absurd value for beachfront in the Keys, and exactly why Florida residents book eleven months ahead and the good weeks vanish the morning they open.

Cancellations happen constantly. They just do not stay open long enough for a human refreshing a web page to catch them. That is the part we solve.

Mangrove, hammock, and one of the last great thatch palm stands

Curry Hammock protects a group of islands in the Middle Keys — mangrove swamp, seagrass beds, rockland hammock, and one of the largest populations of thatch palm left in the United States. Every autumn it becomes one of the best raptor counts in North America.

What else is actually here

The park rents kayaks and tandem kayaks and runs guided mangrove paddles roughly every other Friday morning, weather and tide permitting. It does not rent kiteboarding gear — never has. Anything with a kite on it, you bring it or you arrange it through us.

  • Snorkelling straight off the beach — a surprising amount of life on the rock patches a few yards out
  • Hiking and biking trails through rockland hammock and thatch palm
  • Autumn raptor migration — hawks, falcons and kestrels funnelling down the Keys
  • Shorebirds, herons, egrets, ibis and plovers year round
  • Picnic pavilions, grills, playground and restrooms in the day use area

Questions people ask at the gate

Why buy a pass through you instead of at the entrance?

Because on a windy Saturday the queue at the ranger station is the difference between riding and watching. We buy the pass on your behalf, it arrives on your phone, and you drive in. The convenience is the product — we are upfront that you could do it yourself.

How long is a day pass good for?

The calendar day you bought it, and no longer. Every visit is a separate purchase. If you are here most weekends, the annual pass is cheaper before the end of the second month.

Does the park rent kiteboarding gear?

No. Kayaks and guided mangrove tours only. Bring your own kit or talk to us about getting set up.

Where exactly can I launch?

Launch and land in the day use area only, then ride at least three hundred feet off the shoreline, including past the fence on the campground side. Those rules exist so kiters, swimmers and campers can share twelve hundred feet of beach without anyone getting hurt.

Do I need booties?

Not strictly, but wear them if you are learning. There are patches of sharp rock, sea urchins and coralline algae, and the marl at the water's edge is genuinely slippery.

Can you book my campsite for me?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. You book with the state yourself, in your own name. What we do is watch the availability calendar and alert you the moment a site frees up — which is the part that actually costs people their trip.

What happens if the park is full when I arrive?

Entry is not guaranteed at capacity, pass or no pass — that is the state's rule and it applies to everyone. Refunds go through the park on 1-800-326-3521, and we will help you chase it.

Who are you, exactly?

World Wind Sports, a rider community relaunched around local chapters at real launch spots. This is the Curry Hammock chapter. We are not the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and we do not run the park.
